Mind (and bowel) control: Philips is working on it
I've been wondering who would sell me a TV that bars me from changing channels during commercials. But I didn't dare dream that the same company would also include the inability to fast-forward commercials for DVR users! And I don't care what Techdirt says: A toilet seat that won't open during commercials would be sweet.
Sarcasm: The lowest form of humour for the lowest form of life - marketing people and the evil engineers who do their bidding. (And I am a marketing director, so I know of what I speak.)
Phil's just upset because Compact Cassette revenues have been plummeting since about March of '73. These guys have all sorts of fantasies about marketplace chokeholds. But the internet is all about consumer convenience. If someone ever marketed such a product, some pimply, antisocial teenage hacker would crack the code in a weekend.
Salon has an article about AT&T trying to tier their data delivery speeds. This seems similarly unlikely. There are too many big companies (Google, etc) who are interested in getting as much bandwidth as possible to as many people as possible... And these newer companies have the resources to do an end run around the telcos and cable guys.
It's funny to watch 20th-century executives trying to develop a 19th-century monopoly in a 21st-century communications market. It's not that they mean well, because they don't. But they're so naive they're almost cute.

I think this is a wonderful idea...if Phillips is willing to give us the TVs and DVRs for free.

I've invented a device that inserts thumbtacks into the testes of busybody Dutch scientists.
