Joe Rogan vs Carlos Mencia

Female Jackie D | Category: Comedy

You know, I consider Joe Rogan to be as much of a douchebag as you do (when I remember that he exists, anyway), but I think joke thieves must be worse. Rogan confronted Carlos Mencia on stage at the Comedy Store in LA the other night about his reputation for stealing other comedians' material, filmed their 'conversation,' and cut it with video evidence to support his case. It doesn't look good for Mencia (who actually has two bloggers writing for his show, one of whom is our beloved Irwin, but I doubt we'll be getting any commentary on his boss's supposed evilness from him):

Even if the allegations turn out to be totally bogus - and it's not looking like they are - Mencia loses for reacting so badly. Playing the You're just a little bitch/fag/jealous card has been lame since first grade, dude. (Rogan is now banned from the Comedy Store, and he suspects it may be Pauly Shore's fault. Which...speaking of lame, Pauly Shore being the architect of your career's downfall has to suck.)

i have a comment: who gives a shit?

if "who's gonna build the wall?" is your big evidence, then I think Lou Dobbs has the actual copyright on that "joke". in fact, i've seen george lopez do it and dl hughley do it 2 months ago. it's not exactly some crazy original thought.

but my whole thing on this is: once you sign up to host a crappy reality show and do color commentary for ultimate fighting, then you lose your ability to talk shit. he's just mad because he's not known for comedy. at all. so why does he get to be the comedy police? he's been doing this for years: first it was denis leary, then dane cook, and now carlos.

On the other hand, it would have been great if Mencia had taken a swing at him. If Rogan was going to be banned from the club anyway, why not get escorted out picking pieces of Mencia's teeth out of his knuckles? Just kidding, Rogan probably would have gone for a submission hold.

There's an article about joke thieves in the latest Radar. They mention this, the Louis CK/Dane Cook thing, Robin Williams' entire career, etc. The "Mexicans building the super-fence" joke does seem like the obvious one, parallel thinking and all that, but it's not like Rogan's the only one saying this stuff about Mencia.

In fact, there are a host of comedians who've been making the same accusations against Mencia. I can't stand Rogan, but Mencia didn't exactly defend himself well here, just basically yelled louder into the mic. He also lied about his given name, before he changed it - bad move. Don't go up on stage and start talking shit if you can't defend it in the first place.

Not to be gross, but it's kind of like watching douchebag filling drip out of a douchebag sandwich.

I actually give a shit, because I think joke thieves are punk-asses. If I'd ever been a Robin Williams fan (okay, I did love him when I was three and had a thing for Popeye), finding out what a fucking thief he was would have put paid to that. It's not cool, and neither is the 'defense' that Joe Rogan isn't comedian enough to call him out on it. I mean, I definitely agree with what Zelda said, but Mencia is pretty indefensible on this one. (I do appreciate you adding a comment, though, Irwin. Thanks!)

"Mencia is pretty indefensible on this one"? Are you kidding? So you just automatically believe whatever Joe Rogan edits together on his Final Cut Pro? Then I guess you also believe that all women are cunts, cause that's basically his entire act. Not all "comedians" have time to chop together hit pieces, but if they did, it would be pretty easy to make someone look bad. And it's sad that you'd believe whatever you're fed.

Also, I know it's hard to believe, but some people have stage names. That's right, Sting isn't his real name. And Carmen Electra isn't one of the Connecticut Electras.

This whole thing is really dumb, and I'll admit - Ned is my friend, and I love you guys and this site and I appreciate your shout outs, but Rogan's side isn't the side you wanna be on. In anything.

Comment by Irwin Handleman on February 16, 2007 11:33 PM

Just because he's an asshole doesn't mean he's the only one saying it. Sorry.

Comment by JT on February 17, 2007 12:53 AM

I mean...yeah, can I say I'm on Ari's side instead of Rogan's, for example? I'm not exactly taking up a pro-Rogan argument here as much as I am saying that joke thieves are fucking punk-asses no matter how cool their friends may be and how much I hate their enemies.

"So you just automatically believe whatever Joe Rogan edits together on his Final Cut Pro?"

Ok, then using this analogy, it stands to reason that all of the comedians who Rogan specifically quoted and also featured on his videos are liars - correct?

Comment by Dmac on February 17, 2007 10:06 AM

every comedian in that video is on Joe Rogan's payroll. When he goes on the road, they open for him. I just don't see where the proof is. You're telling me that if a guy does a 2 hour show, and one line is something someone else has done, and that line is a VERY common thought, that's it for him?

Comment by Irwin Handleman on February 17, 2007 11:04 AM

I thought Rogan was a loser (and he is), had no money, and basically was just jealous of Mencia's success. But now we learn that all of those guys are "on his payroll?" Better scratch the jealousy angle in your argument.

Look, Rogan's a massive tool, but he needs more credible defenders that someone who is on HIS payroll, don't you think?

Comment by Dmac on February 17, 2007 2:59 PM

Carlos has changed his name BUT he performed a concert at Western Kentucky University last year and he did an hour long Q&A for the people in attendance and he told us he changed his name and explained that Beaner jokes sound funnier from someone named Carlos than someone named Ned. He hasn't tried to hide it, and as for that joke I've heard a hundred different variations of that joke ranging from CNN commentary to standup comedians. There will always be similarities between jokes, but the fact remains Mencia is flat funnier than either of them.

> Carmen Electra isn't one of
> the Connecticut Electras.

I love that. Can we get some more Electra jokes? Edgar and Edwina Electra and their daughters Elecia and Erica and their son Efrem of Waterbury?

Comment by Crid on February 18, 2007 10:33 AM

And why does it matter what you think about Joe Rogan if he's telling the truth? Look up George Lopez vs. mencia- Even Bobby lee almost outed him.

You guys are just blind fanboys. You attack Rogan, when Mencia is the fraud.

At least Rogan found his niche at UFC, and he's pretty decent.
